After successfully migrating its public website to Drupal in 2016, the county needed to transform its basic intranet into a robust internal communications platform for its 1,100 employees who were dealing with up to four internal emails daily.

• Employees were receiving three to four internal emails a day.
• The employee intranet was not visited regularly or viewed as a repository for a wide spectrum of resources.
• The intranet's design was essentially the same as the county-facing site.

• A unique look and feel for the intranet, distinguishes employee-only online outreach as separate from the user experience on the broader county site.
• The ability to post global alerts to all employees, as well as role-specific notifications, ensures efficient and effective outreach.
• An emergency response framework spells out role relative to a specific threat – most likely a hurricane. Previously, the process of communicating roles for all employees during a time of impending crisis had been the source of some confusion.
• Recordings of the county administrator’s quarterly staff meetings, as well as targeted employee newsletters, are now archived and accessible from the intranet at any point.
• An employee benefits “help” feature provides answers to frequently asked questions, without needing to reach out to HR.

What We Did

We built a comprehensive intranet within their existing Drupal framework, creating a central hub for employee resources, documents, and communications. The platform features targeted notifications, emergency response protocols, and an employee benefits help center. To ensure adoption, we made it the default homepage for all employees and implemented automatic sign-in.

We developed an emergency response framework that clearly outlines each employee's role during potential crises, particularly hurricanes. This replaced a previously confusing system and now gives staff clear direction when time is critical.

One-Stop Resource Center

Everything from quarterly staff meeting recordings to HR documentation now lives in one searchable location. The employee benefits section answers common questions directly, reducing the need for back-and-forth with HR and making processes like open enrollment much smoother.

The Result

The intranet has transformed internal communications at Martin County, with HR being its biggest champion. Built within their existing Drupal site, it's easy to maintain and update. The platform has proven particularly valuable during benefits enrollment periods, centralizing all information and instructions in one accessible location.
