Established in 1974, the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust organization has evolved over five decades, growing its historic sites, expanding its communications through technology, and serving wider audiences. Frank Lloyd Wright’s design philosophy, based on individualism, democratic social principles, and respect for the natural environment, remains relevant in the world today.

The Trust draws its national and international visitor audience through cultural travel and tourism channels. Trust education and enrichment programs for all ages offer an opportunity to diversify participation in classes and programs both virtually and at historic sites.

Top challenge

The site was content dense, and despite most visitors’ primary objective of booking a tour, educational content, membership information, volunteer opportunities, and calls to action for donations, also needed to appear prominently.
There was considerable room for improvement and modernization on the site design, including better image quality.
The mobile site design lacked the standard, expected hamburger menu.
The site did not clearly convey the Trust’s mission and what it does that is distinct from other Frank Lloyd Wright sites.
The design and UX needed to align with goals to expand the Trust’s membership base beyond the current, older cohort group.

Top solution

The new site fully leverages Provus®, which provides a framework for no-code updates and revisions, as needed, along with the ability to easily create landing pages that are close to pixel perfect.
What appears to be a ChatBot in the lower left corner of the site directs visitors to a detailed FAQ page – a workaround solution that sidestepped investment in ChatBot technology.
The content was reconfigured due to existing content types that were outdated. Instead, content was incorporated into Layout Builder block types that integrated with Provus®.
Due to Provus®, the site is easily managed by admins who are able to easily add components such as accordions and FAQs, share widgets, and make updates as needed.
Professional photography, a thorough and action-oriented top nav, along with an engaging home page scrolling experience provide an immediate sense of how multidimensional the Trust is.

A Tightly Orchestrated Migration Plan

The aggressive schedule and multiple moving parts associated with the migration of 41 distinct county sites into a cohesive whole called for a finely tuned plan that was closely adhered to throughout every phase of the carefully orchestrated, 18-month migration. The project was divided into 12, six-week waves, each with a different sets of site owners. Every one of the 12 phases began with a discovery session and included weekly meetings, multiple UAT checkpoints, extensive documentation, and training.

No-Code, Drag-And-Drop Content Editing

Provus, which is Promet’s newly launched component-based design system, proved to be a defining factor in the success of the project -- driving a high degree of development efficiency, while empowering site owners and content editors with the ability with access to a robust library of content editing components.With Provus, the keys for managing the site have essentially been turned over to individual site owners and an empowered cadre of 100+ content editorsLeveraging Drupal Layout Builder, along with a carefully curated set of components, Provus provides site owners with layout options based upon sets of component blocks that can be mixed and matched for no-code, drag-and-drop content editing. While each of the sites is utilizing the same code base, every department’s site has a distinct database, with a cohesive design language and brand guidelines.

The Open Source Drupal CMS has sparked a depth and breadth of benefits. No longer locked in with proprietary software and the associated vendor licensing fees, Orange County now owns the code to its site and is positioned to benefit from the upgrades, new releases, and collective brainpower of the million-member-strong Drupal Community.Significant cost savings are resulting from the elimination of proprietary software licensing fees, a favorable hosting fee model with Acquia, and greater efficiencies overall. Current estimated annual cost savings now stands at $100,000.Savings stemming from migration to an Open Source CMS are in alignment with Promet’s conviction that public funds should not be used to pay for private code.
